Chittaprosad Bhattacharya was a political artist of the mid-20th century. He
preferred watercolor and printmaking, avoiding oil on canvas. He was self-
taught, having been rejected by both Government Art College and Kala
Bhavana, two of India’s most elite schools for painting.
Chittaprosad used prints to create amazingly powerful depictions of life around
him, and his own personal ideals, which were communist to the core. He later
dissociated himself from Communist Party, though he continued to pursue
political themes in his art to the end of his life.
